Alibaba will prohibit its employees from using Anthropic’s Claude Code beginning July 10, according to multiple reports. The company will require staff to use its own Qoder tool instead. Anthropic has restricted Chinese companies and foreign entities owned by them from using its models and has been working to close loopholes that enable Chinese access, including a version of Claude Code that could identify Chinese users. A Reddit post reported that this version could secretly identify Chinese users. Thariq Shihipar, a spokesperson for Anthropic, said on X that an experiment launched in March aimed to prevent account abuse by unauthorized resellers and protect against model distillation, and that stronger mitigations have since been implemented; the company had been planning to remove the tool. Alibaba classified Claude Code as high‑risk software and directed employees to use Qoder.
