Zig moved package management functions from the compiler to the build system.
Zig moved package management functions from the compiler to the build system. The new maker process now contains logic for fetching packages, handling HTTP and TLS networking, and managing compression and parsing of build.zig.zon files. This change reduces the size of the Zig executable by about 4 percent. Safety checks are enabled for networking operations because the maker executable is built in ReleaseSafe mode, and networking and file‑hashing crypto can use host‑specific CPU instructions. The alteration is largely non‑breaking. Flags have been renamed: the --maker‑opt flag is replaced by the ZIG_DEBUG_MAKER environment variable, and the --zig-lib-dir flag is replaced by ZIG_LIB_DIR. Upcoming work includes a build server protocol, detection of build script changes during watch mode, and improvements to incremental compilation. The developer noted that the changes are intended to make the build system faster, simplify maintenance, and support future features such as --watch and --webui. Contributions are welcome.
