Command and Conquer Generals now runs natively on Apple Silicon Macs, iPhone and iPad without emulation. The 2003 real‑time strategy game was originally built for Windows and required translation layers to run on Apple platforms. The port compiles the original engine for ARM64 and translates DirectX 8 calls through DXVK to Vulkan, then through MoltenVK to Metal on iOS devices. The implementation builds on the open‑source GeneralsX repository, which relicenses EA’s GPL‑v3 source release and adds iOS and iPadOS support along with engine fixes. Users must provide their own game assets, obtainable from Steam for approximately $5, and follow scripts that automate dependency installation, configuration, building and deployment. macOS builds are executed with ./scripts/build/macos/build-macos-zh.sh followed by ./scripts/build/macos/deploy-macos-zh.sh, while iOS builds use cmake presets and the ./scripts/build/ios/package-ios-zh.sh script. Known issues include iPad memory limits that may terminate sessions and occasional crashes when backgrounding the app; logs are saved in the Files app. The code is released under GPL v3, and credits list Westwood/EA Pacific, EA, the GeneralsX contributors, the community mainline, and libraries such as DXVK, MoltenVK, SDL, OpenAL Soft and FFmpeg. The engineering log records the development process and is maintained by Ammaar Reshi, with assistance from Claude Code. The project remains open for community contributions.
