Midjourney has asked a federal court to compel Disney, Universal and Warner Bros.
Midjourney has asked a federal court to compel Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. to disclose how they use generative‑AI technologies in its copyright lawsuit. The studios sued Midjourney in 2025, claiming that the startup’s image‑generation models reproduced copyrighted characters such as Bart Simpson and Darth Vader. A judge previously ordered the studios to provide AI‑related documentation only when it related to consumer‑facing videos or images. In its latest filing, Midjourney requested that the court expand discovery to include all internal AI documentation, prompts and outputs used for any purpose, arguing that the current limitation restricts the evidence it can use for its fair‑use defense. Studios’ lead attorney David Singer said the request amounted to a fishing expedition and that the studios only seek to stop unauthorized copying and public display of their characters. He added that the studios do not intend to halt AI development or shut down Midjourney. The court has not yet ruled on whether broader discovery is permissible.
