FEMA funds totaling $7.2 million are being awarded to four Florida municipalities through the Hurricane Ian Hazard Mitigation Grant Match Program (HMGMP). The grants support infrastructure repairs, emergency preparedness and mitigation of future storm impacts. The HMGMP follows FEMA local match requirements that obligate municipalities to provide an equal amount of local funding. The Category 4 hurricane struck Florida on September 22, 2022, causing extensive damage across the peninsula. Charlotte County will receive $5.83 million for a public‑works hurricane‑safe room generator and $93,392 for a leachate waste‑plant generator. The Port of the Islands Community Improvement District will get $750,840 for a Union Road water‑storage and infrastructure retrofit. Seminole County has $319,437 earmarked for a mitigation reconstruction project on Shad Lane, and the city of Palatka will receive $283,996 to build a lift‑station generator. In total, the HMGMP program has distributed more than $12 million in grants since the storm. J. Alex Kelly, Secretary of Commerce, said the funding supports long‑term resiliency and helps communities prepare for future storms. The grants are contingent on local matching contributions to complete the projects.
