Full article

The party colors red for Republicans and blue for Democrats are a relatively recent convention. In 1867 suffragists Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton used yellow, the color of the Kansas state flower, in their campaign for women’s voting rights. By the early 20th century, suffragists added white and purple, with white symbolizing purity, to their uniforms. The current color scheme did not become widespread until the 20th century and does not inherently reflect the ideological diversity of the parties’ supporters.
