An ICE officer shot and killed a Colombian national during an immigration enforcement operation in Biddeford, Maine, early Monday morning. ICE said agents were watching an address for a person with a final order of removal when the driver attempted to flee in a vehicle, prompting the officer to discharge his weapon. The driver was struck and died at the scene. Maine's Attorney General Aaron Frey said the officer was from ICE's Enforcement Removal Operations department and has been placed on leave pending an investigation. Senator Susan Collins said a full and impartial investigation should be conducted. Senator Angus King said DHS chief Markwayne Mullin initially told him the person was a target of an arrest warrant, but later clarified that no warrant existed. The Embassy of Colombia requested information from the Department of Homeland Security regarding the circumstances of the death and will follow the investigation. Witnesses reported seeing an unmarked white SUV and two officers wearing green ICE vests surrounding a white sedan, after which at least four gunshots were heard. One witness described a woman falling to her knees beside her husband's body and a young girl crying. The incident follows a separate fatal shooting in Texas in which an ICE officer killed a 52-year-old builder who had not been the intended target but attempted to run over an agent. DHS leadership changed in March when Markwayne Mullin replaced Kristi Noem. Civil rights groups have filed lawsuits alleging aggressive tactics during recent immigration enforcement surges. An operation dubbed Operation Catch of the Day began in Maine in January.
