Michigan health officials announced on Monday that lettuce and salad greens are a potential source of more than 2,800 cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that causes watery diarrhea, loss of appetite and weight loss. The investigation is ongoing and no specific type of produce, grower or supplier has been identified.

The outbreak includes more than 2,640 cases in Michigan and 177 cases in Ohio, according to state health departments. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded 843 confirmed and 1,500 suspected cases across 31 states on Friday, with 86 hospitalizations and no deaths.

Barbara Kowalcyk, an associate professor at the George Washington University Milken Institute of Public Health, said the investigation is complicated by long incubation periods and delayed reporting, which may be worsened by recent reductions in state and local health department funding.

The Trump administration cut $11.4 billion in grants to state and local health departments in March 2025 and reduced the scope of the FoodNet program in July 2025, limiting monitoring of foodborne pathogens such as cyclospora. Michigan public health laboratories reported a loss of $5.5 million in funding, according to Bridge Michigan.

Dr Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan’s chief medical executive, told the Associated Press that a linked outbreak is occurring. The state health department has urged restaurants and commercial kitchens in the southeast to thoroughly wash leafy greens, snow peas, herbs and raspberries or to cook them, and recommended purchasing whole heads of lettuce, discarding outer leaves and washing inner leaves.

The FDA, under Secretary Kennedy, is investigating the outbreak using epidemiologic, laboratory and traceback tools in coordination with CDC and state partners. HHS senior press secretary Emily Hilliard said the agency is working with 3,000 health departments to gather data.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not identified a specific producer, grower or supplier.
