Sotheby’s will auction a working Apple-1 computer, serial number 01-0033, on July 15 in New York as part of its History of Science & Technology sale.
The Apple-1 was among the first 50 hand‑built units produced in 1976; this example was purchased from the Byte Shop that year by Harry Sadler, who later worked at Apple after meeting Steve Jobs in 1976.
The machine carries an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000 and includes the original cassette deck, keyboard, vintage monitor, operation manual, and software cassettes. Last year a similar wooden‑case Apple-1 sold for $475,000.
The sale also features a NeXT computer used by Steve Jobs at the 1988 introduction, a Mark‑8 minicomputer from 1974, an MITS Altair 8800 from 1974, early sealed Apple Mac systems, and artifacts associated with Thomas Alva Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Richard Feynman and Albert Einstein.
The auction begins at 14:00 EDT at Sotheby’s saleroom at 945 Madison Avenue.
