Wang Jibing, a 56-year-old food delivery rider in China, has won the Lu Xun Literary Prize for his poetry collection "Low Flight". The award recognizes his work that reflects the everyday challenges faced by gig-economy workers.
Wang began posting poems and essays on social media while working as a delivery rider in 2019, and his writing attracted a large online audience. The Lu Xun Literary Prize, named after the prominent 20th‑century Chinese author, is among the country's top literary honors.
His poem "Man in a Hurry" gained attention in 2022 after describing a delivery mishap, and he published his first poetry collection, "Man in a Hurry: Poems of a Food Delivery Rider", in 2023. The prize includes a cash award of 100,000 Chinese yuan, equivalent to about $14,800. Wang said he has no intention of quitting his job and plans to continue working until he turns 60, emphasizing that the award will not change his down-to-earth lifestyle.
His collection "Low Flight", published in 2024, contains poems derived from interviews with roughly 200 delivery riders. The prize's recognition follows other recent examples of blue-collar writers gaining prominence, such as Hu Anyan’s 2023 memoir "I Deliver Parcels in Beijing" and the 2017 online success of "I am Fan Yusu," an autobiographical essay by a migrant worker.
Despite the increased media attention, Wang said he remains committed to his current employment and to maintaining a simple life.
