Coinbase announced that its business customers can accept USDC payments from autonomous AI agents through the x402 payment standard, which was introduced in May 2025 to enable stablecoin transactions over HTTP for AI applications.
The announcement included new AI trading tools that allow users to monitor orders, view live market data and execute actions based on predefined conditions, as well as a software development kit for developers building agent‑powered applications. Coinbase said these products support an “agentic economy,” where AI agents can make payments, manage finances and perform other tasks on behalf of users.
Adoption of AI agents has accelerated, with agent‑generated traffic exceeding human traffic on Coinbase’s Base documentation pages for the first time in the prior month. The company noted that traditional financial infrastructure was built around the assumption that a human clicks a button, a condition that has left businesses, developers and users without tools designed for AI agents.
The rollout follows growing interest from exchanges and payment providers in using stablecoins and blockchain‑based payments as infrastructure for AI agents, a use case that several firms are pursuing. While the new capabilities aim to fill the current gap for AI‑driven transactions, they do not change the existing premise that a human must confirm a payment.
The implementation is expected to affect how businesses integrate AI with financial services, though the long‑term impact on transaction volumes and regulatory considerations remains to be seen.
