Bybit Payments GmbH has obtained an electronic money institution license from Austria’s Financial Market Authority, allowing it to provide payment and e‑money services in the European Economic Area, excluding Malta.
The licensing follows Bybit EU GmbH’s authorization under the EU’s Markets in Crypto‑Assets Regulation in May 2025, which permits crypto custody, exchange, and transfer services. Bybit Payments GmbH will develop card products, merchant payment solutions, open‑banking features and person‑to‑person payments through Bybit.eu.
The company stated that the two entities will maintain separate regulatory permissions, with Bybit EU GmbH handling crypto‑related activities and Bybit Payments GmbH managing regulated payment products. Bybit said the new milestone could strengthen relationships with banks, payment providers and enterprises while reducing reliance on third‑party payment infrastructure.
Bybit has not explained why Malta is excluded from the rollout, and the introduction of the new services is pending further regulatory steps.
