NASA Earth Observatory released its August 2026 satellite image puzzle on August 4, 2026. The puzzle asks participants to identify the location shown in the image. Participants describe the clues they observe.
Each month the observatory publishes a puzzling satellite image for public identification. Participants submit their responses through an online form. They select the topic "Puzzler Answer" and provide a preferred name or alias.
Submissions may include a simple location guess or a detailed analysis specifying the satellite and instrument used, the spectral bands captured, or observations of geology and history. The first correct submission will be recognized on the webpage. Additional contributions may be highlighted.
The answer and a related Earth Observatory Image of the Day story will be posted about one week after the challenge begins. By submitting, participants acknowledge that their comments may be edited, excerpted, or published.
