Voters in Missouri’s 1st District chose Wesley Bell over Cori Bush in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, with Bell winning by about six percentage points. Bell, who unseated Bush in the 2024 primary after she described the Gaza conflict as a genocide, received endorsements from establishment Democrats such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and the Congressional Black Caucus PAC. The pro‑AIPAC super PAC spent roughly $2 million on Bell’s campaign, compared with $9.3 million in 2024, and did not receive comparable advertising support from progressive groups that backed Bush in 2024. The outcome reflects limits on progressive criticism of sustained U.S. support for Israel despite national polling trends that show growing opposition to Israel. Bush, who has maintained her progressive credentials through endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and the Democratic Socialists of America, conceded the loss. Bell’s victory sets the stage for the general election in November, where his positions on Israel and other issues will be tested.
