Wesley Bell, a Democratic congressman, won the primary in the St. Louis area on Tuesday, defeating Cori Bush, the former representative who had served two terms. Bell will be the Democratic nominee for the November general election and is favored to win a second term. He said he would continue to oppose the administration’s policies and support working families. The race attracted significant outside spending, with about $4 million total from groups supporting Bell, including the United Democracy Project linked to AIPAC and the New Democrat Majority PAC, which contributed $1 million. Bush, who was first elected in 2020 and was part of the progressive “Squad,” campaigned on opposition to U.S. aid to Israel and criticized Bell’s vote against the 2021 infrastructure bill. Bell, a former county prosecutor, was backed by House Democratic leadership and the Congressional Black Caucus, while Bush received endorsements from the Democratic Socialists of America and other progressive organizations. Both candidates framed their positions around standing up to former President Donald Trump and addressing regional recovery after a tornado that struck the area in 2025.
