Ani-One Asia removed the television anime Chainsmoker Cat from its streaming service on Thursday, citing compliance with local government regulations. The removal follows a notice from Hong Kong’s Department of Health that told Bahamut Animation Crazy to halt streaming in Hong Kong because the anime displayed cigarette advertisements online, which the department said violated the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance. Taiwan’s Health Promotion Administration said the anime might breach the country’s Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act, which bans promotion of tobacco through television, film, the internet and other media. The series prominently features real cigarette brands such as Mevius. Medialink Entertainment, which operates the service from Hong Kong, took the anime down from all regions where it was available, including Southeast Asian markets. The anime’s ninth episode is scheduled to air on September 2 after a special program replaces it the following week. Two versions of the series exist: an “Evil Dragon Unleashed” edition that reflects the director’s intent on some episodes and an “On‑Air” edition broadcast on terrestrial television. The “Evil Dragon Unleashed” version streams on AT‑X and other platforms, while the “On‑Air” version is offered by AnimeFesta, DMM TV, Fuji TV On Demand, Hulu, Netflix and Anime Times in Japan. In addition, the manga by Nyan Nyan Factory is published in Kodansha’s Young Magazine, with the 13th volume released on August 6 and an English translation by Seven Seas published on June 16. The episode delay does not indicate a direct link to the recent removals from overseas services, and the series continues to be available on several domestic and international platforms.
