Russian forces launched a large combined drone and missile strike against Ukraine on the night of August 19‑20, causing civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure in several regions.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Ukrainian forces intercepted about 88.6 percent of Russian cruise missiles and President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces generally intercept 93 percent of cruise missiles; at least 12 people were killed and 40 injured in Kyiv, where residential buildings, a children's hospital, a school and fuel infrastructure were damaged.

Ukrainian officials said Russian strikes also hit Red Cross facilities and food warehouses near Boryspil, and affected civilian, critical and energy infrastructure in Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Zhytomyr and other oblasts, killing three people and injuring 53 in Zhytomyr after a jet‑powered drone struck a police department.

A Russian Shahed‑type drone entered Moldovan airspace near Kotlovyna, flew for six minutes before crossing into Ukrainian airspace, while a Romanian ministry reported a drone crash near Grindu causing a fire and an F‑16 destroyed a naval drone about 80 miles east of Constanta.

Russian officials said they are augmenting strike packages with North Korean ballistic missiles, including upgraded KN‑30 systems, and have begun deploying launchers in Voronezh Oblast that could fire up to 120 missiles toward multiple Ukrainian regions.

The Kremlin said it plans to have a significant number of combat veterans run for the Russian State Duma in the September 2026 elections, aiming for roughly 22 percent of the new chamber to be veterans, as part of a broader effort to militarize Russian society.

The Russian government has responded to gasoline shortages by monitoring the crisis, importing fuel, banning exports and introducing lower‑grade fuel, while Ukrainian long‑range strikes continue to target Russian oil terminals and refineries.

Russian milbloggers and officials noted that air‑defense capacity remains insufficient, calling for layered defenses, anti‑drone nets and infrastructure redundancy, but analysts say Russia is unlikely to fully intercept Ukrainian strike packages in the near term.
