Apple has deprecated the hdiutil command-line utility in macOS 27 Golden Gate and recommends using the diskutil image subcommand for disk image operations. The updated man page lists replacements for hdiutil commands such as attach, create, resize, info, and chpass, and notes that Apple Sparse Image Format (ASIF) images are supported only by diskutil image. While many hdiutil options are preserved under new names, several options are absent, including -puppetstrings, which provides parseable progress output, and various flags related to create, such as -crossdev, -scrub, and -atomic. In a test, the author used hdiutil to create a disk image of a home folder on a MacBook Pro running macOS Sequoia; the command completed after an authentication prompt due to a root-owned file and took about 110 to 115 seconds. The same operation with diskutil required deletion of the root-owned file to succeed, finished in 40 to 45 seconds, produced a smaller image (2.8 GB versus 2.89 GB), and displayed progress updates. Comparison of the resulting images showed that hdiutil included the Trash folder while diskutil excluded it, indicating default behavior similar to the -scrub option. The author identified three needed improvements for diskutil: enhanced verbose logging, better handling of permission errors, and addition of the -[no]scrub option. Both hdiutil and diskutil continue to exhibit a known bug involving inaccessible .bnnsir files on macOS Sequoia, a problem Apple has not yet resolved and which was requested to be reproduced via an iOS sysdiagnose. Migration to diskutil is advised for script developers to avoid future breakage.
