Model Context Protocol Releases Updated Roadmap. The Core Maintainers and community working groups published a roadmap detailing upcoming specification releases and priority areas for the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The roadmap organizes development into five priority areas, including agentic messaging primitives, HTTP‑native transport unification, agent identity and security, improved tool calling primitives, and enhanced SDK developer experience. Agentic messaging primitives introduce tasks, subscriptions and progress notifications to support long‑running loops and server‑initiated streaming, with composition review across the Agents, Transports and Triggers & Events working groups. HTTP‑native transport unification aims to make remote MCP servers indistinguishable from other HTTP services, extending support to local servers using Streamable HTTP over stdio. Agent identity and security work will standardize recognition of agent credentials through Demonstrating Proof of Possession and Workload Identity Federation, aligning with OAuth standards bodies. Improved primitives seek to standardize tool response handling and implement progressive discovery to reduce client surface area as tool catalogs grow. SDK developer experience investments focus on ergonomics, specification conformance and documentation across supported platforms. Specification Enhancement Proposals (SEPs) related to these areas receive expedited review, while community members are encouraged to join working groups, propose SEPs, start experimental extensions or contribute directly. The roadmap invites contributions to shape the protocol’s future.
