Togo's government on Saturday said it has evidence in the case of two French filmmakers and a Togolese colleague who have been detained since late July on charges of making false statements. The three were arrested on July 27 after authorities said they used a drone in areas considered sensitive due to the risk of jihadist activity. The government said the filming authorization was signed only by their local fixer and was limited to specific locations, and that there were irregularities in how the assignment was carried out. Their lawyer, Martial Akakpo, told Agence France‑Presse that the men deny the charges. They were producing a documentary for France Télévisions. Reporters Without Borders has called for their immediate release, citing health concerns for one of the filmmakers. A doctor warned that the detained filmmaker faces risk of sepsis. The families of the two Frenchmen said they were devastated. The government statement said the men appeared before prosecutors on August 17.
