Ethereum has put forward draft EIP-8390, which would retire the 512-validator sync committee and remove its consensus rewards, replacing the Altair light-client interface with off-chain zero-knowledge proofs. The proposal estimates that eliminating the committee’s reward weight would cut annual consensus issuance by approximately 33,800 ETH, or about 1/32 of total issuance. The draft, posted to the EIP repository on August 24, is in draft status and lacks an activation epoch or a defined roadmap. It removes the sync committee’s weight of 2 within a 64‑unit denominator without redistributing the weight, resulting in a reduction of consensus issuance from 2/64 to 1/32. The document indicates that about 901,505 validators are staked with roughly 42,328,615 ETH locked, producing annual issuance of around 1.082 million ETH. Light-client implementations such as Helios, Lodestar, Nimbus, and Datachain’s IBC client depend on the current Altair update flow and would need to migrate or cease functioning if the proposal activates. The draft claims that Casper FFG finality could be proved within one epoch on a single GPU and verified in milliseconds, but it does not provide implementation details, benchmark data, or a specification for a proving service or client interface. No in‑protocol incentives for producing finality proofs are included, and the proposal leaves migration and economic considerations open. Ethereum would replace a verified on‑chain sync committee mechanism with an off‑chain proof system that is not yet part of the protocol specification.
