NASA’s Perseverance rover used its Mastcam‑Z camera to capture the silhouette of Phobos as it passed in front of the Sun on August 12, 2026, the 1,948th sol of the mission. The image was presented as a simulated view through protective solar eclipse glasses. Perseverance has recorded multiple Phobos transits since its landing at Jezero Crater in February 2021, providing data that help refine the moon’s orbital parameters. By comparing successive recordings, researchers can monitor changes in Phobos’s trajectory and predict its eventual descent toward the Martian surface. Operations for Mastcam‑Z are led by Arizona State University, in collaboration with Malin Space Science Systems of San Diego and the Niels Bohr Institute of the University of Copenhagen, which design, fabricate, test, and supply calibration targets. The Perseverance rover and its instruments are built and operated by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is managed for the agency by Caltech in Pasadena, California. Further observations are expected to continue improving orbital models as the rover’s mission proceeds.
