Ariane 6 launched the Meteosat Third Generation-Imager2 (MTG‑I2) satellite from the Guiana Space Centre on 27 August 2026 at 22:11 CEST (17:10 local time). The MTG‑I2 satellite forms part of the Meteosat Third Generation constellation operated by Eumetsat, of which two spacecraft are already in orbit. It carries a Lightning Imager and a Flexible Combined Imager that provide continuous lightning monitoring and frequent imaging of weather systems, supporting nowcasting of severe weather across Europe. The launch used two P120C solid‑propellant boosters to place MTG‑I2 into a geostationary transfer orbit, marking the first Ariane 6 mission to that orbit and the rocket’s longest flight to date. ESA manages the Ariane 6 programme, and Arianespace acted as the launch service provider for flight VA270. The satellite is expected to produce at least 50 times the data volume of the previous Meteosat Second Generation system, offering greater detail for European weather services. Full operational use will follow calibration and validation activities.
