Meta’s India and Southeast Asia vice president, Sandhya Devanathan, is leaving the company to join OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, the company said.
Devanathan will be based in Singapore and report to OpenAI’s Asia‑Pacific managing director, Kiran Mani, and will oversee consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement and operations across Southeast Asia and Australia.
She joined Meta in 2016, held roles including leading its Asia Pacific gaming business, and was promoted to vice president for India and Southeast Asia in June 2023 after more than a decade with the firm.
Meta has faced increased scrutiny from Indian authorities over online safety and content moderation, including an incident in which Instagram mistakenly restricted a post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a subsequent inquiry into alleged child sexual abuse material on its platforms.
Following her departure, Meta’s India managing director, Arun Srinivas, will report directly to vice president for Asia Pacific Benjamin Joe, a person familiar with the matter said.
OpenAI has expanded its presence across the Asia Pacific in the past two years, opening offices in Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney and Delhi, and recently appointed Prabhjeet Singh as its India head after more than a decade at Uber.
