XREAL introduced the A01 smart glasses in May, priced at about $300, and designed to connect to a device via a USB‑C cable. The glasses use dual mini OLED panels that provide up to 1080p resolution and 1,600 nits of brightness. They are intended for gaming on handheld devices such as the Steam Deck and for watching video content.
The device does not contain an internal battery; power is supplied through the connected device. XREAL describes the projection as equivalent to a 147‑inch screen, which it says creates a more immersive viewing experience. Users have reported that the glasses feel lightweight and comfortable, though they can become warm during extended use. The glasses are compatible with a separate Beam Pro accessory that costs an additional $200. They can also be paired with a phone, but an adapter is required for older iPhone models.
The A01 functions as a screen‑mirroring device, meaning the phone’s display must remain active while the glasses are worn. This creates a redundancy when the same video plays on both the laptop screen and the glasses. Putting the phone in a pocket may reduce jostling but does not eliminate the duplicated image. Heat from the device can cause a tingling sensation on the bridge of the nose and over the eyes. The glasses are heavier than Snap’s Specs but lighter than some other smart glasses. XREAL’s upcoming Project Aura, powered by Android XR, adds hand tracking, access to the Google Play Store, and a tethered puck that serves as a charging and compute unit, offering greater mobility.
The A01 provides a portable display option but does not replace a traditional large screen for movie viewing. The company plans to release Project Aura later, which may address some of the current limitations.
