Climate Change Not Prominent in Democratic Campaigns

U.S. Senator Ed Markey, 80, is seeking re-election in Massachusetts and faces a primary challenge from Representative Seth Moulton, 47. Climate change, a frequent Democratic talking point in previous campaigns, has received less attention in the current race.

During the 2016 and 2020 election cycles, Democrats emphasized climate change to mobilize younger voters and to critique the Trump administration, often promoting proposals such as the Green New Deal. A Democratic think tank, the Searchlight Institute, recently urged the party to downplay climate references, saying they are not a top voter concern. The Sunrise Movement, a youth‑focused organization, altered its mission last fall to broaden its focus beyond climate.

Researchers have described the trend as "climate hushing," noting that polling shows about 60% of Democrats view climate change as a very big problem, a figure similar to 2016. Nevertheless, voters have prioritized affordability, health‑care costs, and the role of money in politics. Strategists argue that emphasizing climate may limit voter connection, while framing it as an economic or security issue can be more effective. For example, in a recent debate between Markey and Moulton, a voter asked how each candidate would lower energy prices, prompting Markey to criticize Trump's attacks on clean energy rather than to outline climate policies.

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island has warned that ignoring climate change represents a strategic error, saying it now affects home insurance, property values and household budgets. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has described climate change as a hoax, and his party has dismissed Democratic climate proposals.

The issue could re‑emerge if Democrats regain control of the House in November or if severe climate‑related events dominate the winter months, but at present climate change is not a central focus of the Massachusetts primary.
