CPython announced that RISC-V is now officially supported as a tier-3 platform, completing its integration into the standard interpreter. The announcement follows months of community development that involved testing on real hardware, bug fixes, and build-system updates. The Python Software Foundation credited the RISE Project for providing RISC-V machines and testing infrastructure, and thanked contributors Ludovic Henry, Furkan Onder, Emma Smith and other volunteers. Sovereign Tech Agency also supported the effort through a fellowship. The new tier-3 status means the architecture is considered experimental but functional for Python development. Future work includes integrating RISC-V into the continuous-integration system via the RISE RISC-V Runners initiative to provide faster feedback to contributors. Long-term goals aim to promote RISC-V to tier-2 support and explore architecture-specific optimizations to improve performance. The Foundation encourages developers with RISC-V hardware to build and test CPython, run existing workloads and report issues to help refine the support. As the Python ecosystem expands beyond the interpreter, broader community effort across packages, compilers and tooling will be required for full adoption.
