DeSantis and Donalds offered differing views on a proposed $17 billion settlement in a child‑safety lawsuit involving Meta, with DeSantis calling the amount “chump change” and Donalds describing it as “a step in the right direction.”

Attorney General James Uthmeier rejected the settlement as “peanuts,” saying the figure was a rounding error that would not meaningfully address alleged harms to children. The case stems from claims that Meta’s platforms expose minors to addictive content.

In a Friday interview with Eric Bolling, DeSantis defended Uthmeier, stating that the settlement represented a rounding error and would not provide substantial compensation for alleged victims. He added that the case would continue and expressed confidence in a successful outcome.

During a separate appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Donalds said he supports the settlement because it would limit young users’ access to addictive social‑media features and reduce excessive scrolling. He also argued that greater access to information online is beneficial, though he warned that algorithms can trap users.

Uthmeier responded on Saturday, disagreeing with reporting that suggested Donalds opposed the settlement, and reiterated that the $17 billion figure is a rounding error that lets Meta off the hook for harming children.

The article noted that it remains unclear why Donalds was not informed about Florida’s decision to continue pursuing the case.

The disagreement highlights contrasting approaches to regulating social‑media platforms and the legal resolution of the child‑safety lawsuit remains pending.
