Chess.com launched its first companion site, Gambit, a free online poker platform in May, and plans to expand into additional classic games such as go, backgammon, and mahjong. The new site mirrors Chess.com’s design and includes bot matches, friend games, tournaments, game review, learning modes, and an Elo‑style rating system. Albert Cheng, Chess.com’s chief growth officer, said poker was chosen because it shares learning and social elements with chess and because the platform will not allow real‑money gambling. He added that the rating system serves as the primary motivator for players and supports a subscription model for premium learning features. Development of the site was accelerated by AI tools that helped read the existing codebase and apply consistent design patterns. The live version of Gambit currently contains no AI‑generated assets. A livestreamed Gambit Cup is scheduled for August 31 at 12 PM ET on Twitch and YouTube, featuring Chess.com co‑founder Danny Rensch and content creator Alexandra Botez. Chess.com intends to use the same rapid development approach to launch the additional games, though no specific launch dates have been announced.
