Leaders from Pacific island nations convened in Koror, Palau, for the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting on Monday, with President Surangel Whipps Jr. urging participants to prioritize climate change and economic stability over geopolitical competition.
The Pacific Islands Forum comprises 18 member states and territories, many with small populations but extensive exclusive economic zones that are strategically valuable in the region.
In recent years the United States, China, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand have increased security and development initiatives in the Pacific, creating competing alliances that sometimes divide forum members.
The forum faced a setback when foreign ministers failed to agree on a statement condemning China's July ballistic missile launch into the South Pacific, as two members refused to endorse it.
Key issues such as climate resilience, fuel security and economic development remain on the agenda, while the influence of major powers continues to shape the discussions.
