Ripple announced a $300,000 contribution on August 29 to support emergency relief for floods in Nepal and Tibet. The floods, triggered by a glacier collapse on August 26, have caused 750 reported deaths and more than 3,000 missing persons across the two regions, with about 90,000 people affected, according to authorities and the Red Cross. Roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure were damaged, limiting access to affected communities. Ripple said the funds will be divided between World Central Kitchen and Mercy Corps. World Central Kitchen will distribute meals in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, while Mercy Corps will coordinate water, sanitation and other humanitarian assistance. Both organizations have prior ties to Ripple, with World Central Kitchen receiving support since 2020 and Mercy Corps having partnered on blockchain-based humanitarian projects. The donation is cash and does not specify the use of any cryptocurrency. The disaster involved an ice‑rock avalanche that blocked the Lhende Khola River before releasing a surge downstream, destroying villages and infrastructure along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors. Rescue operations have been hampered by rain, rising water and landslide debris, and hundreds of workers may be trapped in damaged hydropower tunnels. Nepal has requested international assistance for tunnel rescues and forensic identification of victims. Scientists attribute the glacier collapse to long‑term warming, though further assessment is needed to quantify climate change impacts. Ripple has a history of charitable contributions, reporting more than $200 million in donations from 2018 through 2024, and continues to accept public contributions for the relief effort through the partner organizations’ websites.
