A recent St. Pete Polls survey found Democrat David Jolly and Republican Byron Donalds locked in a statistical tie among likely voters in the gubernatorial contest. Yet the latest campaign finance disclosures reveal a stark disparity in resources. Jolly reported $3.3 million in his primary campaign account and $3 million in a separate political committee as of September 11, with $590,000 raised between September 5 and 11. The Terrell Hogan law firm topped donor lists with a $100,000 contribution. Donalds, a longtime high-volume fundraiser, reported nearly $3.2 million raised across his campaign and political committee during the same period, bringing his total cash on hand to $44 million. The Seminole Tribe of Florida contributed $1.5 million on September 9, and the committee’s records show $4.85 million in total receipts through September 15, including $1 million from the DeVos family and $350,000 from committees linked to Senate President Ben Albritton, President-designate Jim Boyd, Senator Tom Leek, and Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. While Jolly has begun spending heavily on a statewide advertising campaign, analysts such as Inside Elections have shifted the race’s rating to “Lean Republican,” with Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball also upgrading the contest to “Likely Republican.”
