A live-action adaptation of the video game Lollipop Chainsaw is currently in development, according to an announcement from developer Dragami Games. The project was revealed during Tokyo Game Show 2026, where the studio outlined its plans to expand the franchise across multiple media formats.
The film will serve as a prequel to the original 2012 game developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, focusing on the character Juliet Starling prior to the events of the game. It is being described as an "R-rated action comedy" and will continue to center on Juliet as the protagonist. A brief story outline shared by Deadline indicates that the narrative will follow Juliet as she confronts a sudden zombie outbreak at her school, fights to protect her friends and family, and attempts to maintain a relationship with her boyfriend Nick under extraordinary circumstances.
The production is being led by an international team that includes Nada Holdings' Joe Teng, former ZDF Studios drama executive Robert Franke, Takafumi Yuki of Throne Inc, Kirk Shaw of Ambitious Entertainment, and Patricio Rabuffetti of Non Stop TV. The involvement of original creators Suda51 and James Gunn has not been confirmed, and Dragami has not indicated any formal collaboration with them at this stage.
Dragami president Shohei Sato stated that the film represents a significant milestone for the franchise and emphasized the studio's collaboration with a team that "understands what makes Lollipop Chainsaw special" while aiming to create a distinct cinematic experience. The project is part of a broader revival of the series, which also includes an anime adaptation and a forthcoming video game sequel titled Lollipop Chainsaw 2 Back2Back. This game, recently showcased with early gameplay footage, blends familiar elements with new directions, though its development remains independent of the original creative leads.
The announcement follows renewed interest in the franchise after Dragami released a remastered version of the original game, dubbed Lollipop Chainsaw RePop, in 2024. The remaster introduced the title to a new audience and prompted discussions about future directions for the series.
Franke described the film as an effort to honor the tone and style of the original game while crafting a standalone story accessible to new viewers. He noted that longtime fans would recognize the series' signature irreverence and stylistic excess, while the film aims to deliver an experience that does not require prior familiarity with the game.
No casting details or release timeline have been disclosed. The project remains in early development, and further updates are expected in the coming months.
