The Chinese government has indicated it may permit domestic firms such as ByteDance and Alibaba to acquire Nvidia's RTX PRO 5500 graphics processors, according to a report by The Information. The report, citing two individuals familiar with the situation, said the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology had requested that these companies disclose their intentions to purchase the chips. The Information noted that the ministry communicated to certain Chinese enterprises its intention to green‑light the transactions, and that some industry executives anticipate the RTX PRO 5500 will be exempt from U.S. export restrictions. Reuters was unable to independently verify the report. An Nvidia spokesperson explained that U.S. firms remain constrained by a mix of outdated export controls covering gaming products released nearly five years ago and China's own limits on U.S. imports. Neither Alibaba nor ByteDance responded promptly to requests for comment, and the Chinese government could not be reached for clarification at the time of reporting.
