A powerful nor’easter battered the U.S. Northeast for a second consecutive day, submerging low‑lying neighborhoods in New Jersey and knocking out electricity to tens of thousands of households across New York and New England. Tidal surges inundated streets in Howard Beach, Queens, while wind gusts felled trees on Long Island, damaging homes and downing utility poles. The slow‑moving system, which claimed the life of a New York City Housing Authority employee when a tree struck a vehicle on Saturday, was forecast to linger through Sunday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous surf as far north as New England. More than 10 cm (4 inches) of rain had fallen in parts of New Jersey since Friday, and when combined with a rising ocean it produced flood levels not observed in the region for nearly a decade, according to local residents. Over 100,000 customers experienced outages at some point on Sunday, with the most extensive blackouts recorded in coastal counties stretching from New Jersey to Connecticut, according to PowerOutage.us. The Massachusetts Port Authority reported that wind gusts reached 64 km/h (40 mph), prompting the cancellation or delay of more than 250 flights at Boston Logan International Airport. Forecasters warned that tidal flooding would persist through high‑tide cycles on Sunday night, even as the storm’s intensity gradually waned. Though the event’s impact fell far short of the $60 billion damage wrought by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, meteorologists noted that an El Niño‑driven climate pattern could bring additional coastal storms to the East Coast later in the fall.
