Ethereum is advancing toward a vision Vitalik Buterin describes as a cryptographic world computer, with structural changes planned across verification, consensus, privacy and state management following the Hegotá upgrade. In a September 27 essay, Buterin wrote that describing Ethereum solely as a blockchain has become increasingly inadequate, as its architecture is evolving into a hybrid system that integrates blockchain consensus with zero-knowledge proofs, data sampling, privacy tools and decentralized off-chain computation. He noted that Hegotá, the planned upgrade for next year, may represent the final conventional fork recognizable to developers familiar with Ethereum’s 2015 design. The transition aims to move verification away from full node downloads and transaction execution toward SNARK-based verification and PeerDAS data sampling, where nodes validate data availability by sampling portions of the network’s data rather than storing or processing everything. PeerDAS, already active through the Fusaka release, enables this shift and reduces hardware demands for participants seeking strong verification guarantees. The Ethereum Foundation has prioritized quantum-resistant execution, consensus and data layers, targeting completion by December 2029, acknowledging that cryptographically relevant quantum computers could emerge as early as 2030. To support this, proposals like EIP-8288 are exploring in-mempool aggregation of signatures and STARK proofs, allowing recursive proof systems to compress cryptographic workloads and prepare for larger post-quantum signature formats. Another key development, FOCIL (EIP-7805), scheduled for inclusion in Hegotá, seeks to distribute transaction inclusion authority across validators, reducing the power of any single builder to exclude valid transactions and improving censorship resistance. Complementing this, Frame Transactions (EIP-8141) would allow accounts to define custom authorization logic, enabling features like social recovery, spending limits and quantum-resistant signatures at the protocol level. Buterin also anticipates broader privacy enhancements, including encrypted mempools, onion routing and mixnets, alongside zero-knowledge proofs for transaction and account confidentiality. These changes reflect a longer-term roadmap in which Ethereum’s base layer focuses on ordering and state changes requiring consensus, while computation, storage and complex logic increasingly occur off-chain or in parallel systems that are verified cryptographically. Buterin emphasized that modern proof systems could allow computation to be distributed without requiring trust in individual actors, potentially leading to architectures with decentralized history storage, parallel execution and decentralized components between users and Ethereum. While some technologies, such as indistinguishability obfuscation, remain speculative, they are viewed as possible future milestones. The next scheduled upgrade, Glamsterdam, will precede Hegotá, currently targeted for 2027. Together, these upgrades form part of a multi-year effort to rebuild Ethereum’s consensus layer through the Lean program, aiming for faster finality — potentially in eight to 32 seconds by 2030 — and greater efficiency. Ethereum’s roadmap maintains that these goals remain research-oriented and subject to change, but the direction is clear: a transition from a monolithic blockchain to a modular, proof-driven system designed to scale securely into a post-quantum future.
