A professional Pokémon player has sparked online discussion after publicly urging fellow competitors to improve personal hygiene following an incident at a recent tournament.

Donghun Youm, a Texas-based VGC regional champion, described losing his lunch during the 2026 Baltimore Regional Championships due to a strong odor emanating from a nearby participant. In a post shared on Twitter/X on September 27, 2026, Youm stated he became physically ill because of the smell and that his teammates struggled to concentrate on their matches as a result. He noted they reported the situation to event staff.

"I’ve had an incident at Baltimore regionals where I had to throw up due to a nearby player's stench," Youm wrote. "My friends and I couldn’t focus that round due to how putrid the smell was, and we even told a judge due to it. Like, c’mon man…"

The post prompted a range of responses, including commentary on established Pokémon mechanics such as the 'Stench' ability, which has a 10% chance of causing a flinch when the holder is hit by a damaging move. Some community members called for hygiene standards to be formally enforced at events.

"[Washing] should be a requirement to attend an event," one user replied. "People who smell bad should be kicked out."

"If you can afford a Nintendo Switch, you can afford a $3 stick of deodorant dude," another wrote.

This is not the first time hygiene concerns have been raised in relation to in-person gaming competitions. In June of the same year, a card shop in Oregon suspended its Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments after multiple attendees reported unpleasant odors and negative experiences. The shop cited Konami’s tournament guidelines, which require all participants to maintain "clean and wear clean clothing," with noncompliance potentially resulting in penalties.

Pokémon’s official Play! Pokémon Tournament Rules Handbook includes a similar provision, stating that participants must maintain "a socially acceptable level of hygiene" and may be asked to adjust their attire or hygiene practices. Continued refusal to comply with staff requests can result in removal from the venue and forfeiture of tournament credentials.

It remains unclear whether the individual identified by Youm as causing the disturbance faced any formal consequences. Nevertheless, the incident has reignited conversations within the competitive gaming community about the importance of personal hygiene in shared event spaces.
