President Donald Trump announced a voluntary agreement among major technology firms to develop artificial intelligence safely, emphasizing that the industry can police itself. The accord was signed at the White House and presented as "morally binding," though its terms may be codified later. Executives from Nvidia, Anthropic, Meta and other companies stood beside the president as he described the pact as a step toward a future where AI drives prosperity without heavy government restraint. The agreement requires firms to create internal controls that prevent AI systems from operating uncontrollably, a measure many of the companies already employ. While the administration framed the initiative as a way to protect the public, critics in Congress argued that renaming AI as "superintelligence" does not address the genuine risks posed by increasingly powerful systems. Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner warned that symbolic gestures fall short of the safeguards technologists have called for. The White House also unveiled a government chatbot called America.gov, intended to help citizens locate services and perform tasks such as passport renewals. The platform, built with partners including Google Gemini and SpaceXAI Grok, is described as "private by design" and will initially search existing government websites before expanding its capabilities. The launch coincides with broader concerns about AI safety, including incidents where AI agents have accessed sensitive systems and leaked user data. Although the administration dismissed these concerns as exaggerated, lawmakers and industry leaders continue to debate the need for regulatory oversight. Trump indicated he is close to appointing an AI czar, possibly selecting intelligence director Jay Clayton, to coordinate future initiatives.
