Yemen's internationally recognized government announced on Sunday that its armed forces would commence operations to retake areas held by the Houthi movement, escalating a conflict that has drawn in regional powers.

The directive, issued by Rashad Al-Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, instructed all branches of Yemen's military to engage Houthi positions "until the liberation of the country from the grip of the terrorist Houthi militia," according to a public statement.

The move follows weeks of intensified fighting along Yemen's western coastline, where Houthi forces captured several strategic locations in early September. A Saudi-led coalition has since conducted air strikes and ground operations in support of Yemeni troops, marking a significant shift in the conflict's trajectory.

Control of the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a critical maritime chokepoint connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, has emerged as a central objective. The waterway facilitates roughly 10% of global oil shipments and serves as an alternative route to the Suez Canal for vessels avoiding the Strait of Hormuz.

The Houthi movement, which has maintained control over much of northern Yemen since 2014, announced in July a blockade targeting Saudi-flagged vessels in response to what it described as a "siege" on Houthi-held areas. The group has since carried out attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure, including facilities in the eastern province of Al-Dhahran.

Saudi Arabia has reportedly coordinated with Yemeni government forces for a joint offensive, with plans for air support from the Saudi-led coalition. Al-Alimi emphasized in his address that all state institutions remain mobilized for the operation, stating that "victory will be achieved through sustained pressure on Houthi positions."

The conflict's regional implications have grown amid broader tensions between Iran-aligned groups and Gulf states. The Houthis, backed by Iran, have positioned themselves as opponents of Saudi influence in Yemen, while Riyadh has framed the conflict as a defense of regional stability.

No ceasefire agreements or diplomatic initiatives have been publicly disclosed as of the announcement. The United Nations has previously warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis, with over 21 million people requiring aid in Yemen.

The operation represents the most substantial conventional military effort by Yemen's government forces in recent months, though the duration and strategic objectives remain subject to evolving battlefield conditions.
