U.S. President Donald Trump announced the creation of a new task force dedicated to overseeing artificial intelligence development, appointing Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton as its head. The group, referred to as the "Super Intelligence Force," will coordinate federal efforts to maintain leadership in AI technology and manage public engagement across sectors including consumers, public interest organizations, religious groups, critical infrastructure providers, and AI companies. The announcement follows an executive order signed on September 29 that rebrands artificial intelligence as "Super Intelligence" in official communications, replacing the term "artificial intelligence" with "SI" across government platforms. The order mandates this terminology shift in all federal correspondence, reports, and websites.
The task force will report directly to the president and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Its membership includes Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research, Engineering Emil Michael, and Director of the Office of Personnel Management Scott Kupor. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton previously stated that when a technology presents both opportunity and threat, it requires careful oversight. Clayton brings experience from his tenure as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, where he handled high-profile cases including the prosecution of former Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro.
The initiative emerges amid increasing industry pressure for AI regulation. Executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, SpaceX, and Google had previously signed a "morally binding" agreement on AI safety protocols. In a recent interview with Politico's Decoded newsletter, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman argued that AI's benefits justify accepting certain risks, emphasizing that the technology should remain publicly accessible. He stated that society must tolerate some negative outcomes to harness AI's potential for public benefit.
The naming shift has already influenced private sector adoption. Billionaire Elon Musk announced on social media that his company SpaceX will rename its AI platform from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, aligning with the administration's terminology. Musk, who previously led the Department of Government Efficiency during the Trump administration before a public dispute with the president, has recently been re-engaged in federal projects focused on national security and technological advancement.
