The Federal Communications Commission added the original Matic robot vacuum, model 4MA0001, and its charging dock, model 4DK0008, to its list of approved radio devices for import and sale on October 2. The action permits these specific units to proceed through standard regulatory channels, though the devices had never been subject to a ban.

The FCC’s restrictions on foreign-assembled robotics apply only to new products seeking entry into the U.S. market; existing units with previously cleared radios remain unaffected. Matic’s equipment uses an off-the-shelf Intel AX210 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module that underwent individual FCC certification years earlier, eliminating the need for separate waiver approval.

Matic assembles its robots at a facility in Mountain View, California, and sources key components from domestic suppliers. While the company currently meets the threshold for U.S. assembly, it sources only a portion of its parts locally, relying on foreign suppliers for some elements. The waiver could become relevant if Matic expands production overseas and later seeks to import new models.

The FCC is reviewing its robotics import policies and considering tighter disclosure requirements for component origins. In response, Matic has emphasized increased domestic manufacturing, converting its former research space into a production site and relocating offices to Menlo Park. The company reports growing output, having shipped 17,000 units in the current year compared to 1,500 the prior year.

CEO Mehul Nariyawala stated the firm aims to source more components from U.S. vendors and reduce reliance on foreign parts. He noted that Matic may be the only floor-cleaning robot currently manufactured entirely within the United States, a point the company highlights as a competitive advantage.

The waiver applies solely to the two existing models and does not constitute broad brand-level approval. No indication exists that other manufacturers have received similar exemptions for robotics products.
