A 29-year-old Indian citizen, identified as Rohan Rane, appeared in a Paris courtroom on Monday charged with leading a criminal network that exploited minors through digital platforms. Prosecutors allege Rane coordinated a group that coerced underage girls into sharing explicit images, self-harming, and enduring physical and psychological abuse. The alleged scheme, which investigators say operated across multiple countries including the United States, the Netherlands, Britain, and Estonia, involved men from Germany, New Zealand, and the United States who communicated via Discord. According to court documents cited by the U.S. Department of Justice, the group promoted neo-Nazi ideology, antisemitism, and hostility toward LGBTQ+ communities. Members reportedly targeted vulnerable minors through social media, manipulated them into sending nude photographs, and threatened to distribute the images or fabricate emergency calls to intimidate victims. Some participants referred to themselves as 'warlords' and referred to victims using dehumanizing terms. The network allegedly forced girls, some as young as 12, to carve symbols into their skin, perform sexual acts under duress, and attempt suicide through self-harm. One victim described being threatened with violence if she did not comply. U.S. authorities initiated the investigation after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children identified abusive content in 2020. Five American women who were minors at the time have joined the case as civil parties and are expected to testify remotely. French prosecutors requested closed-door proceedings, citing concerns that the accused might intimidate witnesses or retaliate against victims. The trial, which began Monday, is scheduled to continue through Friday. Rane, who previously studied in France and worked as a fitness coach, remains in custody. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment. The proceedings have drawn attention from child protection organizations, which emphasize the need for stronger safeguards against online exploitation.
