Former President Barack Obama will appear in Detroit on October 24 to campaign for Michigan Democratic candidates, the state party announced Monday.
The appearance will bring Obama alongside Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson and other party hopefuls as the state prepares for early voting ahead of Election Day. El-Sayed confirmed the event on social media, writing "Get. Ready." in a post announcing the former president’s participation.
Obama’s visit comes as Democrats defend an open Senate seat and the governor’s office in Michigan. El-Sayed is challenging Republican former Representative Mike Rogers to succeed retiring Senator Gary Peters, while Benson faces Republican Representative John James in the race for governor.
Since leaving office, Obama has remained a prominent figure in Democratic politics, though his public campaign appearances have been limited this cycle. He previously appeared in Texas supporting Senate candidate James Talarico and gubernatorial hopeful Gina Hinojosa, and was featured in a campaign advertisement for Iowa Senate nominee Josh Turek.
The Detroit event marks Obama’s first public appearance alongside the Democratic Senate campaign committee this election year. He is also scheduled to headline a Washington-area fundraiser for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee later in the week.
