A year after the largest liquidation event in crypto history erased more than $19 billion in leveraged positions in a single day, market structure shows divergent recovery patterns for major and smaller digital assets.

Data compiled by CoinDesk Research from order books on four dates — January 1, 2025; October 10, 2025; January 1, 2026; and the week of October 7–13, 2026 — reveals that Bitcoin and ether now hold more resting liquidity near their current prices than they did on the crash day or at the start of 2025. Depth measured in dollars has increased by roughly 75% for Bitcoin and more than 100% for ether within the tightest price bands, indicating renewed capital deployment by market makers rather than mere price adjustments.

On October 7, Bitcoin’s order book contained approximately $11.7 million in buy and sell orders within 1% of the market price, up from about $6.9 million at the beginning of 2025 and $9 million at the start of 2026. Ether’s corresponding depth rose to $4.2 million within 0.5% of price, more than doubling its post-crash level. These gains are not attributable to lower token values; Bitcoin remains roughly one-third cheaper than pre-crash levels, yet dollar-denominated depth has expanded, reflecting greater capital commitment.

The improvement concentrates near current prices, where market makers place the most active quotes. Deeper outlier levels, such as 5% from the price, show less growth, hovering near $24 million — roughly consistent with January 2025 figures. During a recent sell-off triggered by President Donald Trump’s announcement of 100% tariffs on Chinese imports, Bitcoin’s 1% depth slipped about 12% between October 7 and 8, while ether’s tightest band weakened slightly but absorbed pressure better than Bitcoin.

In contrast, altcoin liquidity has declined across dollar-based measures. CoinDesk Research’s basket of altcoins showed peak dollar depth on January 1, 2025, followed by steady reductions through subsequent measurements. Depth at 5% from price fell about one-third since early 2025 to roughly $2 million, while 1% depth decreased by roughly one-sixth. Token-unit depth appears more stable, peaking earlier in the year and declining only modestly, though analysts note this reflects falling prices rather than increased capital engagement.

Spot trading volume on centralized exchanges has also lagged recovery. Weekly spot volume averaged $279 billion over the four weeks ending September 27, 2026, down nearly two-thirds from the $801 billion recorded during the crash week. Activity bottomed in August 2026 at $135 billion and has since doubled, yet remains well below pre-crash levels.

CoinDesk Researcher Saksham Diwan characterized the majors’ deepening as "real capital, not a price effect," emphasizing that the trend diverges from broader market assumptions. Joshua de Vos, Research Lead at CoinDesk, noted that while Bitcoin and ether have attracted renewed institutional attention, altcoin liquidity continues to erode as a whole. He projected that this split will likely persist into the coming year, with major assets maintaining dominance amid sustained institutional interest.

The episode underscores how quickly liquidity can evaporate during periods of heightened volatility, and how its return may be uneven across asset classes. Market structure has evolved since the crash, but the resilience of depth in the largest cryptocurrencies suggests a shift toward more concentrated, institutional-grade trading patterns.
