Cloudflare announced on Friday that it has completed the acquisition of Deno, the startup responsible for the eponymous serverless runtime. Kenton Varda, principal engineer for Cloudflare Workers, said the purchase is intended to strengthen the company’s serverless platform, which enables developers to deploy applications across Cloudflare’s global network. Varda noted that Deno’s recent release of celld, an open‑source implementation of Workers, resonated positively with the Cloudflare team. He emphasized that the company does not view its architecture as a strategy for vendor lock‑in, but rather sees openness and the ability for users to migrate as beneficial for business. Ryan Dahl, creator of Node.js and co‑founder of Deno, stated that his team will join Cloudflare to help make the Workers programming model widely adopted. The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Prior to the acquisition, Deno had raised approximately $26 million in funding, including a Series A round led by Sequoia Capital.
