Tron founder Justin Sun announced that the network’s post-quantum cryptographic implementation is now operational on its testnet. In a post on X on Saturday, Sun said the project is monitoring advances in quantum computing and artificial intelligence and stands ready to deploy quantum-resistant security on mainnet at any time. He added that Tron aims to become one of the few major blockchains to achieve quantum resistance before the anticipated arrival of quantum computers capable of compromising current encryption standards.
Coindesk reported on July 28 that blockchain security firm AmericanFortress unveiled a cryptographic approach designed to shield crypto wallets from future quantum attacks without requiring users to relocate funds, rotate keys or modify wallet addresses. The proposal permits existing wallet addresses to remain unchanged while integrating post-quantum protection. The technical paper outlining the plan was posted to the Cryptography ePrint Archive, though it has not undergone peer review.
Interest in post-quantum cryptography has grown among developers as the prospect of sufficiently powerful quantum computers threatens the elliptic-curve cryptography that secures Bitcoin, Ethereum and numerous other blockchain networks. Earlier this year, a Strategy-led consortium committed $15 million to fund Bitcoin quantum security research, the Ethereum Foundation released a proposal to migrate accounts to quantum-resistant cryptography, and Algorand outlined plans to introduce quantum-resistant accounts by 2027.
A magazine article titled "SHRINCS BIP published: Quantum-secure Bitcoin comes with a catch" also examined related developments.
