Aardman Animations, the studio behind Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run, will release a new stop‑motion series titled Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd & Pichu in 2027. The series, announced by Disney and The Pokémon Company, is slated to premiere on Disney XD and become available exclusively through Disney Plus that year.
The project marks the first time Aardman has produced a series set within the Pokémon universe. It follows Sirfetch'd and Pichu as they travel through the Galar region, undertaking quests to protect and assist other Pokémon. According to the official synopsis, their adventures are marked by both heroic intentions and unforeseen complications, leading to encounters with new Pokémon, rivalries and moments of humor.
The collaboration was first revealed in 2024. Sean Clarke, managing director of Aardman, described the partnership as an exciting fusion of two globally recognized creative forces, emphasizing shared values of craftsmanship and audience engagement. He noted that the series will blend Aardman’s signature animation style with the expansive world of Pokémon.
Phil Rynda, director of original animation at The Pokémon Company, said the series offers a fresh perspective on familiar characters, allowing viewers to experience the Galar region through the eyes of Sirfetch'd and Pichu. He highlighted the production’s attention to detail, stating that the animation aims to evoke tangible sensations such as the texture of tree bark and the atmosphere of the region.
In addition to the new series, Disney has added earlier seasons of the Pokémon anime to its streaming catalogue. Pokémon the Series: The Beginning is now available on Disney Plus in the United States and select international markets, while subsequent seasons are accessible via Hulu.
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, said the addition of Pokémon Tales aligns with Disney’s goal of offering content that resonates with both long‑time fans and younger audiences. She described the series as a “bold, playful new perspective” that complements Disney’s existing portfolio of family entertainment.
The series will debut on Disney XD before becoming part of Disney Plus’s on‑demand library sometime in 2027. No specific release date has been announced.
