Intel has identified silicon photonics as the foundational technology for next-generation systems, stating it is the only company manufacturing 300mm indium phosphide (InP) silicon photonics at volume scale for the broader industry. At the Open Compute Project (OCP) Summit 2026, the company demonstrated how its fabrication capabilities and integration tools are designed to accelerate high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence workloads through faster, more energy-efficient data transmission.

Nic Dubé, senior vice president of Intel's Data Center Systems and Solutions group, described silicon photonics as the "Golden Hammer" enabling a shift from traditional electrical interconnects to optical links. He noted that the industry is approaching physical limits in bandwidth density, reach, and energy efficiency per bit using copper-based connections. Silicon photonics, which uses light instead of electrical signals to move data between chips, addresses these constraints.

Intel emphasized its unique role in producing 300mm InP wafers — essential components for photonic integrated circuits — at scale. These wafers support next-generation optical modules, including co-packaged optics (CPO) and neural processing optics (NPO), which are critical for high-bandwidth, low-latency communication in AI and HPC systems. The company also highlighted its integration tools, which enable reliable platforms combining lasers directly into silicon packages, reducing reliance on external components and service requirements.

According to Intel, its approach aims to deliver interconnects with energy consumption below 5 picojoules per bit, a benchmark long sought in the industry. The company projects that such efficiency gains could significantly reduce power usage across data center racks, pods, and system-level architectures. Additionally, Intel stated it is working with ecosystem partners to standardize external light source interfaces, supporting a diversified supply chain for multi-wavelength sources.

The company believes silicon photonics will enable a new class of flexible, scalable systems tailored to growing AI model sizes and distributed computing demands. While specific deployment timelines were not disclosed, Intel indicated ongoing collaboration with industry stakeholders to bring these solutions to market.
