Stablecoin transactions reached $482 billion through September 2026, a 45% increase from the previous year, according to a blockchain analytics report by Allium. The growth occurs even as the total supply of stablecoins in circulation remained largely unchanged, rising only 0.4% to $305 billion during the same period. Transaction volume grew 71% to over 1 billion payments, suggesting higher turnover of existing stablecoins. Card-based stablecoin payments accounted for $3.9 billion in spending, ten times the prior year's level, with small purchases under $50 driving most of the growth.

Mastercard announced its Global Money Platform in partnership with BVNK, a stablecoin infrastructure firm it acquired earlier in 2026. The platform consolidates traditional currency accounts, stablecoin balances, conversion services, card spending and bank payouts into a single connection for banks and fintechs. Early adopters include payment processors Nuvei and Marqeta. Visa introduced a similar initiative, enabling cross-border payouts through Circle's USDC stablecoin via its Visa Direct service in collaboration with payment orchestration firm Inyo Global. Stripe announced expanded card infrastructure supporting stablecoin balances in multiple fiat currencies across more than 30 countries, with plans to reach over 100 by 2027.

Industry leaders note that businesses increasingly seek to embed stablecoins within existing financial operations rather than maintaining separate digital asset systems. Patrick Mollard, CEO of Paris-based Fipto, stated that the distinction between traditional and digital money is less relevant than enabling seamless movement between fiat and stablecoins within unified treasury and payment environments. While stablecoin payments represent a small fraction of total transaction volume — estimated at 0.03% of Visa's $4 trillion annual payment volume — executives view the integration as part of a broader shift toward more fluid global commerce.

Allium's analysis indicates that only 2.5% of total stablecoin transfers, or $2.4 trillion of $97.9 trillion, qualify as end-user activity after excluding exchange, decentralized finance and automated transactions. This suggests that much of the reported growth stems from increased utilization of existing stablecoin liquidity rather than new supply entering the market.
