A new open-source 3D printing platform called µRepRap has demonstrated repeatable positioning accuracy below 3 micrometers within a 10-millimeter work area, according to project documentation published on Hacker News. The system, designed to operate at micron and sub-micron scales, uses only commonly available materials and builds upon earlier work from The OpenFlexure Project's open-source microscope platforms.

Two active development versions have been documented: the PIKA V0.02 hardware, which achieves approximately 1-micrometer repeatable positioning and 10-micrometer or better accuracy within an 8-millimeter cubic build volume, and the MAUS C V0.04 variant, which reached about 5-micrometer positioning accuracy over a 4-millimeter square area before being superseded by the MAUS 'L' V0.05 model currently in development. Both versions employ 400-step NEMA17 stepper motors for axis control, with some builders using 200-step motors to approach 1-micrometer precision. The system uses UV-curable resin deposited through a fine probe tip, with droplet sizes as small as 4 micrometers achievable using capillary action.

The project aims to extend accessible micro-scale manufacturing capabilities similar to how RepRap democratized macro-scale 3D printing. Researchers note that while silicon-based microelectronics have dominated fabrication for decades with increasingly complex and expensive systems, this approach could enable independent community development outside traditional silicon foundries. The technology also holds potential for biological and medical applications, where microscope platforms capable of sub-micron resolution have recently created new opportunities for low-cost, rapidly evolving equipment.

Current implementations use UV nail gel resin as the primary building material, with a 3-watt UV LED module integrated to cure deposited layers. Optical inspection relies on USB microscopes with at least 8-megapixel resolution for initial setup and conventional bench microscopes offering 100x to 200x magnification for final examination. A 1.3-millimeter 'Hello World' inscription etched on a glass slide using a Sharpie marker in mid-2025 demonstrates the system's baseline capabilities.

The project documentation emphasizes that while significant progress has been made, substantial work remains to develop complete fabrication processes for complex structures, including mechanisms requiring hinges or flexures. The long-term goal is to create a self-replicating ecosystem of micron-scale fabrication tools that could eventually produce devices at even smaller scales.
